EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW BEFORE FITTING YOUR FLOOR

Installation

Can I lay SPC flooring over existing tiles?

Yes, in many cases you can install SPC flooring directly over existing ceramic or porcelain tiles.

The existing tiled floor must be secure, clean, dry and sufficiently flat. Loose tiles, uneven surfaces or deep grout lines may need repairing or levelling before installation.

One of the advantages of rigid-core SPC flooring is that you may be able to avoid removing a perfectly sound tiled floor, saving time, mess and additional preparation costs.

However, always check the installation requirements for your chosen flooring. You'll also need to consider the additional floor height around doors, kitchen units and adjoining rooms.

KWIK Tip: Don't rely on rigid flooring or built-in underlay to hide a badly uneven subfloor. Getting the preparation right is essential for a great finish.

Does SPC flooring need underlay?

KWIK Floors SPC flooring comes with built-in IXPE underlay, so there's no need to purchase and install a separate layer of standard flooring underlay.

The integrated underlay helps provide acoustic insulation and comfort while simplifying installation.

That means:

  • No separate underlay to purchase.
  • One less installation stage.
  • Less cutting and preparation.
  • A simpler, quicker fitting process.

Adding extra underlay underneath click flooring that already has integrated backing can cause excessive movement and damage the locking joints.

Always follow the installation instructions for your chosen product, including any requirements for moisture protection or vapour barriers.

Can SPC flooring be installed over concrete?

Yes, SPC click flooring can be installed over a suitable concrete subfloor, provided it meets the manufacturer's requirements for moisture, flatness and condition.

Concrete should be clean, sound and sufficiently level before installation.

Newly laid concrete needs adequate time to dry, and existing concrete should be checked for moisture issues. Depending on the subfloor and product instructions, a suitable moisture barrier may also be required.

Although SPC flooring itself is waterproof, that doesn't mean moisture problems underneath can be ignored.

KWIK Tip: If you're unsure about the condition of your concrete subfloor, speak to your fitter before ordering or starting installation.

Can I lay SPC flooring over wooden floorboards?

Yes, SPC flooring can sometimes be installed over existing wooden floorboards, but the floorboards must be stable, secure, dry and sufficiently flat.

Loose boards, movement, raised edges or significant gaps can cause problems for click flooring.

Depending on the condition of the existing timber floor, additional preparation or overboarding may be necessary to create a suitable surface.

It's important to check the installation requirements for your chosen product, particularly where the existing floor has movement or ventilation considerations.

KWIK Tip: Preparing your existing floor properly is usually much cheaper than having to lift and refit your new flooring later.

Can I install click SPC flooring myself?

Yes! If you're confident with DIY, click SPC flooring can be a practical option for fitting yourself.

KWIK Floors click systems allow the flooring pieces to lock together without the need for adhesive.

However, a successful installation isn't just about clicking the boards together. You'll need to consider:

  • Preparing and checking the subfloor.
  • Measuring and planning your layout.
  • Cutting boards around doors and corners.
  • Allowing the correct expansion gaps.
  • Fitting skirting, beading and thresholds.

Straight plank flooring is generally simpler and quicker to fit than herringbone.

Always read the product's installation instructions before starting, and consider using a professional fitter if you're unsure.

Is herringbone flooring harder to install than plank flooring?

Herringbone click flooring is designed to be straightforward to install, but it usually takes longer to fit than traditional straight planks.

That's because herringbone involves more individual pieces, more positioning and often more cuts around the edges of the room.

If you're hiring a flooring fitter, don't just ask about their daily rate. Ask how many days they expect the installation to take.

A room with alcoves, awkward corners, multiple doorways or kitchen units can take longer than a simple rectangular room.

KWIK Tip: Agree the expected fitting time and total labour cost before work begins. That way, you're less likely to face an unexpected extra day's fitting charge.

Product Information

What is SPC flooring?

SPC stands for Stone Polymer Composite (also known as Stone Plastic Composite). It's a type of luxury vinyl flooring with a strong, rigid mineral-based core.

SPC flooring combines realistic wood or stone-effect designs with waterproof construction, durability and easy maintenance.

At KWIK Floors, our SPC flooring also features a click-lock installation system and built-in IXPE underlay, making it a practical choice for modern homes.

It's particularly popular for kitchens, bathrooms, hallways, living rooms and busy family spaces.

Think beautiful wood-effect flooring, without many of the maintenance demands of real timber.

Is SPC flooring better than LVT or laminate?

SPC flooring is actually a type of luxury vinyl flooring, but it has a rigid core rather than the flexible construction found in many traditional LVT products.

SPC is popular because of its waterproof construction, dimensional stability and convenient click installation.

Traditional flexible LVT can also be highly durable and waterproof, but installation methods and subfloor requirements may differ.

Laminate flooring often contains a wood-based fibreboard core, meaning moisture resistance varies depending on the product.

For kitchens, bathrooms and busy family homes, waterproof SPC flooring can be an excellent choice.

The best option depends on your room, budget, existing subfloor and preferred installation method.

What is a flooring wear layer, and why does it matter?

The wear layer is the transparent protective layer above the decorative design of luxury vinyl flooring. It helps protect the floor's appearance against everyday foot traffic, scuffs and wear.

You'll often see wear layer specifications such as 0.3mm, 0.5mm and 0.55mm.

Generally, a thicker wear layer provides more protective material above the design, although overall durability also depends on the quality of the flooring and its surface coating.

Many KWIK Floors SPC ranges feature a 0.55mm wear layer, making them a practical option for busy homes.

Remember, the wear layer is different from the total flooring thickness. A 6mm plank doesn't have a 6mm wear layer!

Always check the individual product specification before ordering.

Does the thickness of SPC flooring matter?

Yes, flooring thickness matters, but thicker doesn't automatically mean better.

SPC flooring is available in different overall thicknesses, including 5mm, 5.5mm, 6mm and 7mm options at KWIK Floors.

The right thickness depends on the product's construction, locking system, intended use and installation requirements.

A thicker floor isn't necessarily more scratch-resistant, because surface durability also depends on the wear layer and protective coating.

When comparing flooring, look at the complete specification rather than judging quality by thickness alone.

Is SPC flooring waterproof?

Yes! KWIK Floors SPC flooring features waterproof rigid-core construction, making it an excellent choice for kitchens, bathrooms, utility rooms and busy family homes.

Unlike many traditional wood-based flooring products, SPC doesn't rely on a moisture-sensitive timber or fibreboard core.

That means everyday spills, muddy paws and wet shoes are much easier to manage.

However, waterproof flooring doesn't make the entire room or subfloor waterproof. Standing water and leaks should always be dealt with promptly, and installation instructions must be followed.

For everyday living, waterproof SPC flooring combines practical performance with realistic wood-effect designs.

But just how waterproof is SPC flooring? Read our guide to waterproof SPC and LVT flooring to discover what happens when spills occur, where you can install it and what you need to know before you buy. →

Can SPC flooring be used with underfloor heating?

Yes, many SPC flooring products, including all KWIK Floors ranges, are compatible with suitable underfloor heating systems.

SPC flooring can work particularly well with water-based underfloor heating when installed correctly.

However, compatibility depends on the specific flooring, heating system, subfloor construction and temperature limits.

Always check the manufacturer's installation instructions and maximum permitted floor temperature before fitting.

If you're planning underfloor heating alongside new flooring, it's best to discuss both systems with your installer before work begins.

PLAN YOUR PROJECT WITH CONFIDENCE

Measuring & Costs

How much flooring do I need for my room?

To calculate how much flooring you need, multiply the length of your room by its width in metres to get the total area in square metres (m²).

For example:

5m × 4m = 20m²

You'll then need to add an allowance for cuts and wastage.

As a general guide, KWIK Floors recommends:

  • Plank flooring: Approximately 10% extra.
  • Herringbone flooring: Approximately 15% extra.

Complicated rooms with alcoves, corners or unusual angles may require more.

Finally, divide the total area required by the coverage per pack and round up to complete packs.

Read our full guide: How Much Flooring Do I Need? Flooring Calculator Guide.

How much extra flooring should I order for wastage?

We recommend allowing approximately 10% extra for straight plank flooring and 15% for herringbone flooring.

This accounts for cuts around walls, doorways, kitchen units, corners and other obstacles.

Herringbone generally requires more cutting because of its distinctive zig-zag pattern.

For example, a 20m² room would typically require approximately 22m² of plank flooring or 23m² of herringbone flooring, before rounding up to full packs.

KWIK Tip: Keep a few spare planks after installation. They can be useful if you ever need to replace a damaged piece in the future.

How long does it take to install SPC flooring?

The time required to install SPC flooring depends on the room size, condition of the subfloor, flooring pattern and complexity of the layout.

A simple rectangular room with straight click planks will generally be quicker to fit than a room with lots of corners, doorways or a herringbone pattern.

Subfloor preparation, removing old flooring and fitting trims can also add time.

If you're using a professional fitter, ask for an estimate of the total installation time rather than relying on their daily rate alone.

KWIK Tip: Ask your fitter whether their quote includes preparation, cutting, thresholds, skirting and finishing. It could save you an unexpected bill later.

BEAUTIFUL FLOORS FOR REAL HOMES

Everyday Flooring Care

Is SPC flooring suitable for kitchens and bathrooms?

Yes! Waterproof SPC flooring is a fantastic option for kitchens, bathrooms and utility rooms.

Its rigid waterproof construction makes it practical for rooms where everyday splashes, spills and moisture are common.

Unlike traditional timber flooring, SPC doesn't have a wood-based core that can swell when exposed to moisture.

You also get the warmth and character of realistic wood-effect designs, without the same maintenance requirements as natural timber.

Just remember that waterproof flooring doesn't replace proper waterproofing in wet areas, and all installations must follow the manufacturer's guidance.

Is SPC flooring good for dogs and pets?

Yes, SPC flooring can be an excellent choice for homes with dogs, cats and other pets.

Its waterproof construction makes muddy paws, spilled water bowls and little accidents much easier to clean up.

The protective wear layer also helps resist everyday scuffs and surface wear.

However, no flooring is completely scratch-proof. Keeping pets' claws trimmed, removing grit regularly and using furniture protection will help maintain your floor's appearance.

For busy family homes, SPC flooring offers a practical combination of durability, easy cleaning and beautiful wood-effect finishes.

How do I clean SPC luxury vinyl flooring?

SPC flooring is designed to be easy to maintain, making it a practical choice for busy households.

For everyday cleaning:

  • Sweep or vacuum regularly using a suitable hard-floor setting.
  • Use a slightly damp mop and a cleaner approved for your flooring.
  • Wipe up spills promptly.
  • Avoid steam cleaners, abrasive cleaning products and excessive water unless specifically permitted by the manufacturer.
  • Use felt pads underneath furniture to help prevent scratches.

Removing grit and dirt regularly is one of the simplest ways to protect your floor's finish.

Always follow the care instructions supplied with your chosen flooring.

Choosing Your Floor

Should I choose herringbone or plank flooring?

Both herringbone and straight plank flooring can completely transform a room. The best choice depends on your preferred style, room layout and installation budget.

Herringbone creates a distinctive zig-zag pattern with a classic parquet-inspired appearance. It's ideal if you want your flooring to make a statement.

Straight planks create a more traditional wood-floor appearance and can make spaces feel calm, open and contemporary.

Planks are generally quicker to install, while herringbone usually requires more planning and cutting.

At KWIK Floors, we offer both styles in beautiful waterproof SPC flooring.

Read our Herringbone Flooring Ultimate Guide to explore the different looks.

What flooring is best if I want the look of real oak?

Oak-effect SPC flooring is a brilliant option if you love the appearance of natural timber but want something waterproof, practical and easy to maintain.

Modern wood-effect flooring can recreate realistic grain patterns, knots and natural colour variations.

At KWIK Floors, you'll find everything from pale and natural oak finishes to warm honey tones, smoked oak and darker wood-effect designs.

Our biggest recommendation? Order samples before choosing.

Flooring colours can look completely different depending on daylight, artificial lighting, wall colours and furniture.

Can I use the same flooring throughout my home?

Yes! Using the same SPC flooring throughout several rooms can create a beautiful, consistent look and make your home feel more connected.

It's particularly popular for open-plan kitchens, living rooms, dining areas and hallways.

Waterproof SPC flooring can also be suitable for bathrooms and utility rooms, subject to the individual product's installation requirements.

However, continuous installations need careful planning. Large floor areas, doorways, expansion requirements and changes between rooms may require suitable transition profiles.

Always check the manufacturer's installation instructions and discuss the overall layout with your fitter before starting.

KWIK Tip: Measure all the rooms together and order enough flooring for the entire project to help maintain a consistent finish.

★★★★★"Highly recommend Kwik Floors for anyone upgrading their home flooring across the UK! They offer an amazing selection of SPC planks and wood-effect floors at very reasonable prices. The ordering process was seamless and the next-day delivery was super impressive!"
